Children receiving Young Environment Award 2002
|
The Initiation
Growing menace of polybags was being observed by us.
Volvo India
had an offer - an environmentalists award for youngsters. Students need to set a mission, team up with five like-minded classmates and get the teacher or parents to support the vision and devise a project that would make a difference to the environment and implement it. After implementing the project, the students have to log on to www.volvooceanadventure.org and enter the action zone that will enable students to present the project to the world web. The last date to post the project
was March 31,2002. After judging at the national level, the winning team will travel to
Gothenburg, Sweden for the next level of evaluation where students from around the world will participate. Apart from prizes ranging from USD 4000 to 10,000, the winner will get recognition from the environmentalists all over the world."
Volvo Ocean Adventure call galvanised us to formalise the project.
Thanks to VOLVO.

Volvo Young Environmentalists Award and Volvo Ocean Adventure
The Volvo Young Environmentalists Award is a global contest involving students from across the world, encouraging them to research and present projects on environmental issues. The Award involves a group of students assisted by a teacher, preparing a detailed project report on any environmental issue affecting local ecosystems.
Volvo had initiated this Award in order to initiate dialogue among the youth on environmental issues, one of the company's core values. The company aims to encourage the youth to take practical environmental action in their own homes, schools and local areas and exchange ideas through the Volvo Young Environmentalists Award.
Volvo Ocean Adventure is an internet-based global environmental education programme for young people between 10 and 16 years. The programme has two main aims: to increase knowledge about environmental issues connected with oceans, rivers and
lakes & the world 's climate system and to engage young people in practical environmental work in their local community.

Other objectives
In due course of time it has been decided to include issues for promoting use of eco-friendly leaf plates and cups during picnics, at tourist centres, recycling old greeting cards, restrict use of deodorants and sprays for its CFC content
etc.
We will learn the process for converting/recycling garbage and other waste materials for useful purposes like compost for gardening, power generation for hotel, water for the plants, etc. We will encourage use of flower/plant extracts for use as perfumes / deodorants - these are the itr, oleresins of
yesteryears, use organic farming in place of chemical fertilizers like urea
which are almost at same cost but have much less social costs.
